Linux For Beginners

Choose your distro and stay with it!

New users are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to choose and to STAY WITH one of the main stream and well supported user friendly distros. Of these, I suggest Fedora, Open SUSE, Mint, and Ubuntu as being among the best. These tend to be at the forefront of latest developments, so it might be sensible to wait a few months for new releases to stabilise before attempting to install them.

Folks who simply "try" various distros are very likely to be disappointed. Although the underlying Linux operating system is common to all, there can be significant differences in the installation programs, in the file packaging systems, and even in the file directory structures. These differences can be confusing even for seasoned users of Linux. DO stay with your distro of choice.
